What is Fair Elo?
Traditional Elo rankings are based solely on match outcomes (win, draw, loss), whether in chess, football, or other competitive sports. Fair Elo (FElo) goes a step further by taking into account fair outcomes: each match contributes proportionally according to the statistical probabilities of each result. Instead of a binary or ternary scoring system, FElo distributes points continuously, reflecting the true performance of each team.
By incorporating fair probabilities, a team that wins may gain fewer points than its opponent if the statistical model shows it was largely outperformed. Conversely, a team that loses narrowly against a much stronger opponent may still gain points reflecting its strong performance. This approach ensures that the rankings reward merit and consistency, not just raw results.
For clubs, the FElo rating combines both the club's individual points and the points accumulated by its league, capturing the overall competitive environment. For national teams, the rating also includes points from their confederation (such as UEFA, CONMEBOL, or AFCON), allowing the system to account for regional strength.
Beyond the static FElo ratings, we also calculate a dynamic power ranking. This ranking places more emphasis on recent form, rewarding teams that are currently performing well. While this makes the power ranking more volatile than the classic FElo table, it provides a useful snapshot of the teams that are in top form at any given moment.
This is a purely analytical project. While we provide data-driven insights, numbertwenty is not a prediction engine for gambling. We do not encourage sports betting; our goal is to bring transparency and objectivity to football analysis.
